Vanderbilt pitcher Brian Miller wins the 2014 College World Series and then proposes to his girlfriend, Megan Bonds.

“I’ll tell you, it’s actually a sweet little story,” Miller said. “The first game of the year at Long Beach I was with Tyler Beede in the outfield, and he said, ‘You won’t propose to your girlfriend if you win the national championship.’ I shook his hand and said, ‘I will do it.’ And here we are.”

John Norwood’s home run in the top of the eighth inning gave Vanderbilt the lead, and the Commodores beat Virginia 3-2 on Wednesday night for their first College World Series championship.

Norwood turned on Nick Howard’s 97 mph fastball and sent it into the left field bullpen to break a 2-2 tie in the third and deciding game of the College World Series finals.

It was Norwood’s third homer of the year, his first since April 19, and Vanderbilt’s first since May 16. It also was only the third home run in 16 CWS games and the 22nd in 72 games by the Commodores (51-21).

Vandy Beats Louisville 5-3 in Omaha

Adam Ravenelle anchored down with 2 and 1/3 innings of shutout relief as the Vanderbilt Commodores held on for a 5-3 victory in the opening round of the College World Series in Omaha.

Perhaps the comedic relief during stretching of the Vanderbilt team has helped to cut the tension as their success continues to grow.
